Creating a flexible education space and wildlife trail
Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne wanted to convert their static foyer into a multi-functional educational room that could be used by school groups visiting the sanctuary. They also wanted new plant and animal signage throughout the sanctuary that would provide better storytelling for visitors.
We refurbished the foyer of the main building at Zealandia, using a modular pegboard system and cases, which can be moved easily and replaced individually if and when needed.
We also designed and built all of the furniture on wheels so that it can be shifted depending on how the space is being used. A large pivoting wall on wheels can be moved to close off the area for educational talks, and opened up when not in use.
We created the sanctuary’s first signage strategy, incorporating bilingual signage and over 150 stunning illustrations for their wildlife and botanical trails. We also revamped their main entry signage and helped them design new marketing materials.
Zealandia have genuinely transformed Wellington’s natural environment, by bringing our native birdlife back to the city. They have also inspired other groups throughout the country to join their efforts to eradicate pests and protect our native species. No wonder they were crowned the top tourism operation in the country for 2023! We continue to support them in whatever ways we can, including workshop facilitation, strategy, marketing and design.
“What would I say to someone considering using StudioC? They are a bit like apple pie. Once you have the first piece, you know that you will want to go back for more. They are contemporary when they need to be, classic when they need to be but always focused on the needs of the client and delivering what the client is after.”

“I love working with StudioC! Their creative solutions have helped our storytelling at Zealandia so much. For example, the amazing mahi they did for our interpretive signage in the valley means that all our visitors can easily connect with the species that call the sanctuary home.”
